Learn more about how AI works in Novelcrafter, and ways you can use it.

Time for a quick breather before we dive into Part 2! In this next set of lessons, we’ll explore how you can use Artificial Intelligence (AI) in your writing journey.
While AI can write stories in one go, that’s not the only way it can be used. You can think of AI as a multi-talented assistant that can help with many different parts of the writing process. In addition to generating prose, AI can act as a:
Research assistant, quickly gathering facts and details for your world.
Brainstorming buddy, offering fresh ideas when you feel stuck.
Editorial advisor, giving you feedback on your drafts, characters, or plot points.
Using AI can often deliver the information or inspiration you need and actually reason about your story context, in a way a normal search engine just can’t (and thus much faster than searching the internet).
However, many writers find the research process itself one of the most enjoyable parts of their work. If that’s you, please continue to enjoy that process! You can still use Novelcrafter to organize your findings in the Codex, just as we covered in Part 1.
Who this part is for
This section is for anyone new to using AI in their writing journey. Maybe you’ve experimented with a tool like ChatGPT, but you’re wondering how to apply it to your writing process in Novelcrafter.
Think of AI as another tool in your writer’s toolkit, alongside your thesaurus and style guide. Some writers will find it useful every day, while others might only use it for a specific task. We encourage you to try the techniques in the following lessons and see which methods you prefer. There is no right or wrong way to use these tools.
The Novelcrafter approach to AI
We intentionally designed Novelcrafter with a “Bring Your Own Key” (BYOK) model for AI to give you more power. This approach provides two major benefits:
Flexibility and choice: You can connect to a wide range of AI services, allowing you to choose the one that best fits your budget, style, and needs. Not having it be tied to your subscription also means you don’t need to worry about credits expiring when you’re not using AI!
Privacy and control: For maximum security, you can even connect Novelcrafter to an AI model that runs entirely on your own computer. While more on the technical side, this way you’re not subject to AI companies tweaking their models non-stop.
Throughout these lessons, we’ll refer to these different AI providers as “AI Vendors.” A popular starting point for many of our users is OpenRouter, which gives access to many different AI models, including OpenAI’s GPT, Anthropic’s Claude, Google’s Gemini, and X’s Grok, in addition to many other (open-source) models.
