Text Replacement Prompts

Using text replacement prompts in Novelcrafter.

2 min read Last updated May 2, 2025

You can make changes to existing (or AI-generated) prose within the manuscript of Novelcrafter by using text replacement prompts.

There are three system prompts (expand, rephrase, shorten) to get you started, however you can also create your own prompts and presets, and add those from other users in our prompt hub (coming soon).

To use a text replacement prompt:

  1. Highlight the text you wish to edit.

  2. Choose the prompt that you wish to use. Depending on the prompt that you are using, this will either begin to generate prose immediately, or will prompt you to select the prompt inputs.

System Prompts

For most users, the three system prompts will cover the majority of use-cases.

Expand

The expand prompt will take the selected text and expand on it based on any instructions that you give it. If you go into Tweak and Generate , you can change the amount you want the text expanded by, and detail how you want it to be expanded. Any of these can by set as presets.

Rephrase

The rephrase prompt will take the selected text and rephrase it based upon the input you select. In addition to changing the POV and tense, you can select:

  • Add inner thoughts
  • Convert to dialogue
  • Convert passive to active voice
  • Use different words
  • Show, don’t tell

You can also add in your own instructions for the rephrase (e.g. Make it more dramatic), by clicking on the Tweak and Generate option.

Shorten

This prompt will shorten your selected prose by a defined amount. There are three presets, but you can also set your own amount:

  • Half (halves the length of the highlighted text)

  • Quarter (quarters the length of the highlighted text)

  • Single Paragraph (condenses the selected text to one paragraph)

Square bracketed instructions

If you are wanting to make changes that are small, very specific for the text that you are rephrasing, or you want to make multiple different changes within the same section, then you may wish to place your instructions in the text, enclosing it in square brackets [ ] .
