Aliases & Mentions
Using aliases and nicknames to keep track of Codex entries throughout your novel.
Regardless of if you use AI or not, aliases are essential for keeping your Codex entries organized. Whether you use them to store nicknames, alter-egos, or titles associated with the Codex entry, these words are then highlighted within the Novelcrafter manuscript, plan, and all snippets/chats, allowing you to track their mentions.
To see mentions of your Codex entry or any of its aliases:
- Go to the Codex entry
- Go to Mentions tab
- Click through the tabs below to see where your Codex entry is mentioned.
You can learn about other ways to use aliases in our Codex Recipes cookbook.
To hide aliases from showing up in your manuscript (i.e. if you don’t want to keep seeing the words highlighted):
- Go to the Codex entry
- Go to Tracking tab
- Deselect ‘Track this entry by name/alias’.
Case-Sensitive Matching
By default, Novelcrafter matches Codex entry names and aliases case-insensitively. If your entry name is a common word and ordinary uses are being highlighted (for example “Will”, “May”, or “River”), enable case-sensitive matching in the Tracking tab. When enabled, only occurrences that exactly match the capitalisation will then be counted.
For more details on all tracking options, including case-sensitive matching, auto-pluralisation, the exclusion list, and AI context settings, see the Codex Tracking documentation.
